Michael Mazzei, MD, MPH, MS, a surgery resident at Temple University Hospital, discussed bariatric surgery findings he presented at ObesityWeek 2019, the largest obesity-centric conference in the world, with Healio’s Endocrine Today. Dr. Mazzei and colleagues evaluated a dataset of adults with diabetes who had gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy and found that those who had an HbA1c of more than 7% (poor glycemic control) before their bariatric surgery were more likely to be readmitted to the hospital, and had more trips to the intensive care unit and a higher rate of overall morbidity.
