Jay Simhan, MD, FACS, has been named Chair of the Department of Urology at Temple University Hospital and the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University.

“This is an important milestone for our Health System as we continue to align and integrate our services and expertise under the Fox Chase – Temple Urologic Institute structure,” said Michael A. Young, MHA, FACHE, President & CEO of Temple University Health System.

Dr. Simhan joined Temple Health in August 2022 as Professor of Urology and Director of Reconstructive Urology at the Fox Chase Cancer Center, as well as Fellowship Director for the Fox Chase Reconstructive Urology Fellowship. In addition, he has served as Vice Chair of the Fox Chase Cancer Center Department of Urology since the Department’s formation in December 2022 and has been a key member of the leadership team of the Fox Chase–Temple Urologic Institute since its official launch in April 2023.

An internationally recognized leader in reconstructive urology, Dr. Simhan has authored over 120 peer-reviewed publications and has taught and lectured extensively at national and international meetings, including the American Urological Association (AUA) Board Review. He is a highly engaged member of the AUA and a distinguished leader in the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons (GURS), where he serves on the Board of Directors and as Fellowship Committee Chair. His contributions to these organizations underscore his dedication to advancing education, fostering innovation, and delivering exceptional patient care.

Dr. Simhan’s deep long-time connection to Temple Health makes this appointment especially meaningful. After earning his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he completed his urology residency at Temple University Hospital, followed by a premier fellowship in Genitourinary Trauma, Reconstruction, and Prosthetics at UT Southwestern. His return to Philadelphia has brought world-class expertise to the region.

“The collaboration among the Departments of Urology at Temple University Hospital, Lewis Katz School of Medicine, and Fox Chase Cancer Center will allow us to continue to grow one of the most distinguished urology and urologic oncology programs in the country,” added Amy J. Goldberg, MD, FACS, The Marjorie Joy Katz Dean at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine (LKSOM). “With shared expertise and resources under the Fox Chase–Temple Urologic Institute, we are setting a new standard in patient care, education, and research.”

Dr. Simhan succeeds Jack Mydlo, MD, who led the Department of Urology for 25 years with distinction.

“Dr. Mydlo’s leadership has had an indelible impact on this department, and his legacy of excellence is clear in the fact that one of his trainees will now lead this next chapter,” said Claire Raab, MD, President & CEO of Temple Faculty Physicians (TFP). “With the combined talents and expertise of our TFP/LKSOM and Fox Chase clinicians, we are confident that Dr. Simhan’s vision will guide us into a future of continued growth and success.”

This transition represents an exciting new era for the Fox Chase–Temple Urologic Institute as it continues to unite two outstanding departments, fostering collaboration and innovation across the health system.
