MaryBeth Foster, of Crofton, Maryland, and Joe DeMayo, of Northeast Philadelphia, met for the first time at April 11th’s Phillies game to throw out the first pitch on National Living Donor Day. MaryBeth had Nutcracker syndrome, a rare vein compression disorder that led her to have her kidney removed in January. Joe needed a second kidney transplant after acute kidney injury – he received MaryBeth’s kidney during a surgery at Temple University Hospital. Julian Harmon, a Perioperative Services Assistant at Temple University Hospital and a kidney transplant recipient, and Kenneth Chavin, MD, MBA, PhD, FACS, Director of the Abdominal Organ Transplant Program at Temple University Hospital also participated in a first pitch at the Phillies game. 6ABC, FOX29 and NBC10 highlighted MaryBeth and Joe's story.
