View All News

MaryBeth Foster, of Crofton, Maryland, and Joe DeMayo, of Northeast Philadelphia, met for the first time at a Phillies game on April 11th to throw out the first pitch on National Living Donor Day. MaryBeth had Nutcracker syndrome, a rare vein compression disorder that led her to remove her kidney in January. Joe needed a second kidney transplant after acute kidney injury – he received MaryBeth’s kidney during a surgery at Temple University Hospital. The Northeast Times provided continuing coverage of their story. Julian Harmon, a Perioperative Services Assistant at Temple University Hospital and kidney transplant recipient, and Kenneth Chavin, MD, MBA, PhD, FACS, Director of the Abdominal Organ Transplant Program at TUH, also participated in a first pitch at the game.
