Temple University Health System’s preparations for and treatment of patients amidst the coronavirus pandemic continue to be part of the media’s COVID-19 coverage.
- ABC News spoke with Gerard J. Criner, MD, FACP, FACCP, Chair and Professor of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and Director of the Temple Lung Center, about “silent hypoxia,” a condition that some doctors have started to see in patients with COVID-19. Patients with “silent hypoxia” have surprisingly low oxygen levels – but are breathing normally and so don’t know it. Yahoo! News and MSN.com picked up the ABC News story.
- Temple University Hospital is participating in a variety of clinical trials that are testing investigational treatment options for patients diagnosed with COVID-19. Dr. Criner discussed those clinical trials in a live interview with NBC10, as well as with CBS3 and the Morning Call.
- Jullian Taylor, a defensive lineman with the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers and Temple alumnus, made a generous gift to the Temple University Hospital Emergency Fund and Community Emergency Fund. CBS3 highlighted the donation from the former Owl and included perspective from Tony S. Reed, MD, MBA, Chief Medical Officer of TUH, about what it means to Temple.
- Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Lisa Gartner offered insight on what it was like to go behind-the-scenes at Temple University Hospital (TUH) during the coronavirus pandemic. The publication highlighted through an article, photos, and video how TUH, which is treating the most COVID-19 patients in Philadelphia, transformed the Boyer Pavilion building into a coronavirus hospital.
- WHYY interviewed Dr. Criner and David Fleece, MD, Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and Chief Medical Information Officer at Temple University Hospital, for an article about how to accurately calculate the number of lives lost to the coronavirus pandemic.
- Hong Wang, MD, PhD, EMBA, Interim Chair of Microbiology and Immunology, Professor and Director of the Center for Metabolic Disease Research, Professor of Pharmacology, and Professor in the Sol Sherry Thrombosis Research Center and the Cardiovascular Research Center at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM); Jian Huang, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Assistant Professor in the Center for Metabolic Disease Research at LKSOM; and Yi Zhang, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at LKSOM, and co-workers shared with the Philadelphia Inquirer how their colleagues in China donated personal protective equipment (PPE) to Temple. Drs. Wang, Huang, Zhang, and others had sent PPE to China earlier in the pandemic before the United States was affected.
- Stephanie Fagbemi, a third-year medical student at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, spoke to TIME about her work with the Philadelphia Organization of Health Professional Students (POHPS). She has helped the group distribute smart devices to city nursing homes and to Temple hospitals in an effort to ensure patients can connect with their families.
- Drew Katz, who is on Temple’s Board of Trustees, described in a Philadelphia Inquirer article how he has partnered with two other businessmen to obtain and distribute masks to those in need. Mr. Katz purchased and distributed 50,000 masks to Temple University Hospital.
- Kartik V. Shenoy, MD, Associate Professor of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM) and Director of the Lung Volume Reduction Surgery Program at Temple University Hospital, and Aaron D. Mishkin, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine at LKSOM, were guests on the “Your Radio Doctor” program on 1210 WPHT. They discussed the COVID-19 pandemic and transplants. - Jeffrey I. Stewart, MD, Associate Professor of Clinical Thoracic Medicine and Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, joined WDEL to discuss the use of inhaled nitric oxide, specifically the INOpulse system, in certain patients with COVID-19 who require supplemental oxygen. This is an investigational product available via the Food and Drug Administration’s emergency expanded access program.

Salerno, MD, MS, Associate Professor of Clinical Thoracic Medicine and Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and Director of Critical Care Services at the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit at Temple University Hospital, spoke with Diario de Salud, a news outlet in the Dominican Republic, about the coronavirus pandemic.
- Philadelphia boxer Luis Roche spent more than two weeks at Temple University Hospital receiving treatment for COVID-19. His mother also contracted the virus. He shared his story with CBS3.
- Hayes Kelly, a driver for Keystone Quality Transport, spent 10 days at Temple University Hospital receiving treatment for COVID-19. 6ABC was there for his discharge.
- Pennsylvania State Representatives Jared Solomon and Kevin Boyle joined local Chinese-American leaders to deliver boxes of PPE to Temple University Hospital-Jeanes Campus. The Northeast Times captured the donation.
