Domenico Praticó, MD, Scott Richards North Star Charitable Foundation Chair for Alzheimer’s Research; Professor in the Departments of Pharmacology, Microbiology and Immunology; and Director of the Alzheimer’s Center at Temple at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine (LKSOM); and a team of LKSOM researchers have shown for the first time that a molecule known as VPS35 detects and removes defective proteins, including a potentially harmful protein called tau, from neurons. Tau otherwise accumulates and contributes to neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease. The findings were published online July 9 in the journal Molecular Psychiatry. Scienmag, Bioengineer.org, ScienceDaily, Neuroscience News, Medical Xpress, Medical News Today, and other outlets covered the news.
