6ABC interviewed Gerard J. Criner, MD, FACP, FACCP, Chair and Professor of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and Director of the Temple Lung Center, and patient Ronny Neal about the Spiration Valve System, a minimally invasive treatment for severe emphysema. Mr. Neal was treated under the EMPROVE clinical trial, for which the Temple Lung Center was the lead enroller. The Spiration Valve System was granted U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in December 2018 under the breakthrough medical devices designation. Temple University Hospital recently became the first U.S. hospital to treat a patient with it following that FDA approval.
