Milo Sewards, MD, Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine and Professor of Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and Residency Program Director of Orthopaedic Surgery at Temple University Hospital, spoke with NBC Sports Philadelphia about the injury to Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper. Harper was hit by a pitch and sustained a left thumb fracture. Dr. Sewards, who is not treating Harper, discussed why the injury is concerning for a baseball player, why Harper needs surgery, and the timeframe for his return.
