Jennifer L. Aldrich, MD, Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, offered insight for a Philadelphia Inquirer article about the updated guidelines for blood donor eligibility that focus on behavior rather than sexual orientation. Back in May, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) eased restrictions that prevented men who have sex with men from donating blood unless they abstained from sex for three months. Under the new guidelines, blood donation centers should screen all donors, regardless of their sex, with a questionnaire that evaluates their risk for HIV.
