Rohit Soans, MD, Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at Temple University Hospital and Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, provided insight to the Philadelphia Inquirer about a clinical trial that is testing whether killing cells on the inner surface of the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine past the stomach) can lead to better control of blood sugar in those with type 2 diabetes. The outpatient endoscopic procedure is called duodenal mucosal resurfacing, and early results show reduced A1C, reduced need for insulin and reduced liver fat. Dr. Soans is not involved in the study.
