Lewis Katz School of Medicine Student Angela Udongwo Joins NPR’s ‘Here & Now’ to Discuss Work with Dr. Hillel Maresky on the Lack of Research on the Radiologic Appearance of Black Hairstyles

View All News

Angela Udongwo, a third-year student at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, joined NPR’s “Here & Now” to discuss her work with Hillel S. Maresky, MD, Assistant Professor of Radiology at the Katz School of Medicine, on the lack of research on the radiologic appearance of Black hairstyles and how popular Black hairstyles like braids, twists, and locs appear on MRI, CT and X-ray. If a radiologist is unfamiliar with how Black hairstyles appear on radiologic imaging, it can lead to incorrect diagnoses which may require serious follow-up. Their research is focused on teaching radiologists and ED physicians about how Black hairstyles appear on scans.
