Scientists at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM) have received a $12 million Program Project Grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to explore molecular mechanisms of heart injury and repair and hopefully identify new paths to the development of innovative heart therapies. Walter J. Koch, PhD, W.W. Smith Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine, Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology, and Director of the Center for Translational Medicine at LKSOM, is the principal investigator. Under the grant, Dr. Koch and colleagues, including Raj Kishore, PhD, Professor of Pharmacology and Medicine and Director of the Center’s Stem Cell Therapy Program; Douglas Tilley, PhD, Assistant Dean of Faculty Affairs and Associate Professor of Pharmacology; John Elrod, PhD, Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Associate Professor in the Alzheimer’s Center at Temple; and Meredith A. Brisco-Bacik, MD, MSCE, FACC, Associate Professor of Medicine and Clinical Sciences, will collaborate on four complementary projects. Media outlets such as Scienmag and News-Medical.net highlighted the grant.
