A research team led by Jessica H. Beard, MD, MPH, FACS, Assistant Professor of Surgery and Director of Trauma Research at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM), sought to determine the magnitude of Philadelphia’s increase in firearm violence during the COVID-19 pandemic and also to understand the potential causes of the increase by trying to pinpoint when it occurred. In a new research letter published in JAMA, the team, which includes Amy J. Goldberg, MD, FACS, George S. Peters, MD and Louise C. Peters Chair and Professor of Surgery at LKSOM and Surgeon-in-Chief and Senior Vice President of Perioperative Services at Temple University Health System, and Zoe Maher, MD, Assistant Professor of Surgery at LKSOM, found a significant and sustained increase in firearm violence in the city following the enactment of COVID-19 containment policies. Multiple media outlets, including the Philadelphia Inquirer, 6ABC, NBC10, CBS3, WHYY and FOX29, highlighted the research.
