Medscape interviewed Carla LoPinto-Khoury, MD, Associate Professor of Neurology at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, about a new meta-analysis published in the December issue of Epilepsy Research. The meta-analysis examined the use of carbamazepine, which is widely used for epilepsy and psychiatric conditions, and its impact on vitamin D levels. Dr. LoPinto-Khoury, who was part of the meta-analysis, recommends monitoring patients taking carbamazepine and their basic metabolic liver function, blood counts and vitamin D levels to see if supplementation or alternative medications are needed.
