A Philadelphia Inquirer article highlighted the work that Hillel S. Maresky, MD, Assistant Professor of Radiology at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, and Angela Udongwo, a third-year student at the Katz School of Medicine, are doing to shine a light on the lack of research on the radiologic appearance of Black hairstyles and how popular Black hairstyles like braids, twists, and locs appear on MRI, CT and X-ray. If a radiologist is unfamiliar with how Black hairstyles appear on radiologic imaging, it can lead to incorrect diagnoses which may require serious follow-up. Their research is focused on teaching radiologists and ED physicians about how Black hairstyles appear on scans.
