The Philadelphia Inquirer interviewed Abiona Berkeley, MD, JD, Interim Senior Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, for an article about diversity and inclusion at Philadelphia-area medical schools. Dr. Berkeley highlighted the new admissions process at the Katz School of Medicine. For the first time, five North Philadelphia community members interviewed prospective medical students in the Class of 2026 and had a say in the Admissions Committee’s decisions. The Student Diversity Council was instrumental in the design and implementation of the process. The Inquirer also highlighted the U.S. News & World Report’s 2023 “Most Diverse Medical School” rankings, in which the Katz School of Medicine finished the best in the region and 8th nationally, with 28.7 percent of its students from underrepresented groups.
