Abiona Berkeley, MD, JD, Interim Senior Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University; Hillel S. Maresky, MD, Associate Professor of Radiology at the Katz School of Medicine; and Angela Udongwo, Katz School of Medicine student, were interviewed for an article in Scientific American about addressing health disparities and advancing health equity through culturally sensitive or concordant care. Dr. Berkeley discussed the opportunity for development and growth with medical school curriculum, while Dr. Maresky and Angela Udongwo discussed their work on the lack of research on the radiologic appearance of Black hairstyles and how popular Black hairstyles like braids, twists, and locs appear on MRI, CT and X-ray. If a radiologist is unfamiliar with how Black hairstyles appear on radiologic imaging, it can lead to incorrect diagnoses, which may require serious follow-up.
