Important announcement concerning Temple University Health System (hospitals and doctors) and United Healthcare Community Plan (PA Medicaid Managed Care Plan)

Temple University Health System’s provider agreement with your health insurance company, United Healthcare Community Plan, is scheduled to end on January 31st. While both Temple and United are working hard to work out a new agreement, we have not yet been able to do so.

If no agreement is reached, Temple will not be a United HealthCare Community Plan participating provider beginning February 1st. This means that United Healthcare will not pay for care at Temple Health hospitals and doctor’s offices, except for emergency room services. The Temple sites include:

  • Temple University Hospital – Main Campus (Broad and Ontario Streets)
  • Temple University Hospital – Episcopal Campus
  • Temple University Hospital – Northeastern Campus
  • Temple University Hospital – Fox Chase Cancer Center Outpatient Department
  • Temple University Hospital – Jeanes Campus
  • Temple Ready Care sites
  • Temple Faculty Practice Plan Physician Offices
  • Temple Physician Inc. Physician Offices

If you are currently still enrolled in United Healthcare Community Care Plan and would like to continue receiving care at Temple Health, you will need to switch to another health plan listed below.

You can easily make this switch at any time. The letter below provides information about this, and you are also welcome to call us directly with any questions or concerns by calling Temple Financial Counseling Department at 215-707-7608.

Temple Health has a long-standing commitment to the health of our community and we wish to continue to treat you and your neighbors. Thank you for choosing us for your health care.

Things to know:

How can you ensure that you have access to Temple hospitals and doctors?

Change your health coverage from United Healthcare Community Plan to one of the participating plans below.

Two exceptions: You may continue care at Temple Health without changing plans if:

  1. You are pregnant. If you are pregnant, you may continue to go to Temple Health for pregnancy and post-partum care.
  2. You need continuing care. If you need more treatment for a medical condition that you’ve had treated by Temple Health within the last twelve (12) months; or if treatment services have been Prior Authorized after January 31, 2023 you can get continuing care treatment. Continuing care means treatment for 60 days from February 1, 2023.

You may ask for continuing care by calling Member Services at 1-800-414-9025 TTY/PA Relay: 711.

Tell Member Services the name of the hospital you go to, and tell them what treatment you need.

When can you change your coverage?

You may request a change in plans at any time, however the effective date of the change will be based upon when you make the change. If the request occurs prior to the 15th of the month, the change in plans will be effective the 1st of the following month. If the request is made on or after the 16th of the month, the change will not be effective until the 1st of the following month.

For example: Request for change made on January 14th, the effective date of change will be February 1st.

Request for change made on January 16th, the effective date of change will be March 1st.
