Montes with her DAISY Award.

Rachel Montes, RN, a nurse in the SICU at TUH-Main Campus, recently received the DAISY Award for nursing excellence. Montes was recognized for her commitment to her patients, her clinical knowledge, and her dedication at the bedside. Read this note from a current patient’s wife thanking Montes for her support:

“My husband is a patient at Temple University Hospital. He’s spent one month and 20 days in the SICU. He’s still on a roller coaster, and I never know what to expect. Everything is new and frightening as I see him struggle. Nurse Rachel Montes is there working diligently to help my husband through this battle. She patiently explains things to help me understand. She cares for my husband and me. Every time I see her, her knowledge and skills are evident. For example, when my husband needed his dialysis, she made sure he was able to get it. I was so worried, and she made me feel so comfortable. She’s very understanding, and worries about how you feel. Thank you Rachel Montes, and God bless her and all of the nurses.”

Montes and her colleagues on the SICU celebrate her achievement.

The DAISY Award was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who passed away from an autoimmune disease. The Barnes family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring, and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, and created this international award to say thank you to nurses everywhere.
