Herman Hurwitz, MD, FCAP, a 1962 graduate of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and his wife Sandra Hurwitz, have committed a gift of $1.2 million to the Katz School of Medicine. Their gift will establish the Hurwitz Family (Herman S. Hurwitz, M.D. ’62; Sandra Hurwitz; Scott Michael Hurwitz; and David Philip Hurwitz, M.D. ’91) Scholarship Fund and will award scholarships year after year to medical school students with financial need.

“We are incredibly grateful for the Hurwitz family’s generosity,” said John M. Daly, MD, FACS, Interim Dean, Dean Emeritus and Harry C. Donahoo Professor of Surgery at the Katz School of Medicine. “Their gift will make a profound difference to our students in helping them pursue their dreams of a medical school education.”

“My education, mentoring and experiences at Temple University and Temple University School of Medicine allowed me to grow in my profession and to help many people through the practice of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine,” said Herman S. Hurwitz, MD ‘62, FCAP. “It also allowed me to meet my wonderful life partner, Sandi. Sandi and I felt that it was time to give back. We hope that the scholarship fund that is being established will assist many others to become Temple physicians and help many people through the practice of medicine.”

Dr. Hurwitz was raised in Chester, Pennsylvania. He received his undergraduate degree from Temple’s College of Science and Technology in 1957, followed by his medical degree in 1962. He then completed a pathology residency at Temple University Hospital in 1967, followed by service in the U.S. Navy.

After working for Kennedy Health System in New Jersey, he became medical director of Damon Clinical Laboratories in Trevose, and then senior medical director of Quest Diagnostics when the company purchased Damon. At Quest, Dr. Hurwitz employed the Six Sigma management doctrine to reduce errors and improve lab efficiency at the testing giant, and became a sought-after authority on health statistics, with important findings based on his company's database of 17 billion lab-test results.

Mrs. Hurwitz was raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She received an undergraduate degree from Arcadia University and a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She attended Temple for additional graduate studies, which is where she and Dr. Hurwitz met.

The Hurwitz’s son David also received his medical degree from Temple in 1991. He is currently a hospitalist in Florida. Dr. Hurwitz’s sister, Dr. Zelda Lederman, a retired psychiatrist in Moorestown, New Jersey, also received her medical degree from Temple.
