Organ and tissue donation is one of the most selfless gifts one patient or family can give another—and we work hard to make those donations possible because we believe in their lifesaving power. Ever since Temple University Hospital (TUH) performed Philadelphia’s first heart transplant in 1984, we’ve been one of the nation’s leading transplant centers. This past April, we swept the 2024 Hospital and Healthsystem Association (HAP) Donate Life Pennsylvania Challenge, with Temple Health earning first prize in the Top-Performing Health System category for the third year in a row, and TUH receiving the Top-Performing Hospital award for the second time in the last three years.
Now, we’ve earned even more prestigious recognition for our work to promote donation: Temple University Hospital has been honored with the 2024 Gift of Life Donor Award from the Gift of Life Donor Program and HAP Southeast Connect. This award is given annually to a hospital with superior performance in organ donation that has either achieved a 75% organ donation conversion rate during the past year or has dramatically improved their performance.
Temple University Hospital was singled out for our consistent leadership on behalf of organ donation, both on our campuses and across the region. In particular, we were commended for our strong culture of donation and excellent working partnership with Gift of Life. We were also recognized for supporting donation at all levels of our organization and through our Organ Donation Council, which promotes clinical best practices.
To celebrate our achievement, Gift of Life has produced a video shining a spotlight on TUH’s work on behalf of organ donation. You can watch the video below:
