The Temple Bariatric Program offers support groups and ongoing education to assist you during all phases of the bariatric surgery process.
Bariatric Surgery Support Groups
Several months before surgery, you’ll watch an educational seminar presented by our surgeons. Topics include:
-
Basic principles of weight-loss surgery
-
Complications
-
Expected outcomes
-
Importance of Lifestyle Modifications
Patients who had successful bariatric surgery are often invited to share experiences and answer questions. Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Ongoing support is an important part of your recovery. The Temple Bariatric Program offers monthly support groups to provide you with education, encouragement and empathy. These meetings are professionally guided by our clinicians and dietitians who specialize in the physical and emotional challenges associated with weight-loss surgery.
The meeting format is group discussion, supplemented with supportive materials, special activities and guest speakers.
Class length: 1.5 hours
Prior to surgery, each patient is required to attend a Bariatric Patient Teaching Class provided by our nursing and dietary team members. These classes are designed to help patients accomplish their weight-loss goals by:
- Making new lifestyle changes
- Becoming more confident at making healthy food choices
- Understanding nutritional needs and diet stages for after surgery
- Learning how to care for themselves after the procedure
Class length: 1.5 hours and usually occurs 1–2 months before surgery
The Temple Bariatric Program runs a Facebook group for current patients and those who are considering bariatric surgery. This group offers you a space to connect with others who share similar questions and concerns as you, and can offer support in real time. Group members also use this forum to easily exchange article links, informational videos and personal photos.
