What to Expect on Your First Voice, Airway & Swallowing Center Visit

You should expect to spend 45–60 minutes at the office for a new patient visit.

Upon Check-In

You will be asked to complete several questionnaires. These help the team understand the impact your voice and/or swallowing problems are having on your everyday life.

In the Examination Room

You will be evaluated by a Speech Pathologist and a Laryngologist (physician).

The team will obtain the history of your problem, and learn your voice-use style, demands and needs. They will evaluate the function of your speech and swallowing muscles. They may ask you to perform voice tasks into a microphone for computer analysis. Diagnostic testing to examine the throat, vocal folds and swallowing mechanism will be performed, based on the nature of your problem.

The physician will determine the treatment plan based on the information gathered, and discuss this with you at the end of the visit.
