Symptoms of pulmonary embolism can vary depending on how much of your lung is involved, the size of the clots, and your overall health. Common signs and symptoms include:
- Shortness of breath that typically appears suddenly and worsens with exertion
- Chest pain that worsens with deep breathing (pleurisy), cough, eating, bending or stooping
- Cough that produces bloody sputum (mucus)
Other signs and symptoms that can occur with pulmonary embolism include:
- Leg pain or swelling (usually in the calf)
- Clammy or discolored skin (cyanosis)
- Fever
- Excessive sweating
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat
- Dizziness
IMPORTANT: Pulmonary embolism can be life-threatening. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience unexplained shortness of breath, chest pain or a cough that produces bloody sputum.
