Cardiac Sarcoidosis

Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory condition that can affect multiple organs in the body, but is most often associated with the lung and lymph nodes. Tiny collections of white blood cells (granulomas) develop in an organ, causing inflammation. As the inflammation progresses, it interferes with the organ’s ability to function. The exact cause of sarcoidosis is unknown; however, infections, environmental exposures, and genetic mutations have been linked to the condition.

Cardiac sarcoidosis is a rare condition in which the granulomas develop in the tissue of the heart. The inflammation caused by the granulomas affects the electrical system, muscle, valves, arteries and pericardium. Left untreated, this condition can result in arrhythmias and heart failure.
