In hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the heart muscles become abnormally thick. The thickening either blocks the blood flow out of the heart or makes it harder for blood to be pumped out of the heart. Younger patients are more likely to have the severe form, however, this condition can develop at any age. Also, patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy are at a higher risk for sudden death, which can occur at any age.
