In less-serious LRTIs, the symptoms are relatively mild and can be similar to the common cold. These include:
- Congestion or runny nose
- Dry cough
- Sore throat
- Low-grade fever
- Mild headache
Mild LRTIs can sometimes become more severe, leading to pneumonia, bronchitis, or other more serious infections. At times one may have a viral infection that is then complicated by a bacterial infection. Symptoms of a more serious LRTI include:
- Fever
- Severe cough
- Rapid breathing or difficulty breathing
- Wheezing
- Skin turning a blue color due to lack of oxygen
- Chest pain or tightness
