What Is Meningitis?
Meningitis is inflammation of the tissue around your brain and spinal cord (meninges). Viral meningitis is the most common type. You can develop this when a virus enters your body through your nose or mouth and goes to your brain.
Bacterial meningitis is rare, but it can be deadly. This type of meningitis usually starts with an infection that feels like the common cold. It can cause stroke, hearing loss and brain damage or harm to other organs.
Meningitis is more common and critical in people who have weakened immune systems. It can become serious or even life-threatening quickly. Any type of meningitis requires prompt medical attention.
Symptoms
Symptoms of meningitis can include a rash, confusion, seizures and sensitivity to light.
Seek medical care immediately if you have these symptoms:
- Sudden high fever
- Severe headache
- Stiff neck
- Nausea or vomiting
Treatment Options
Meningitis treatment includes evaluation of your symptoms, health history and condition. Your diagnosis will include blood and imaging tests. A doctor will do a spinal tap, which provides a sample to test cerebrospinal fluid.
Depending on your condition, your treatment may include:
- Antibiotics (for bacterial meningitis)
- Antiviral medicines (for some types of viral meningitis)
- Other medications to help treat symptoms
Some vaccines are available to prevent certain bacterial infections that cause meningitis.
