Peritonitis

What Is Peritonitis?

The peritoneum is a silk-like membrane that covers organs in the abdomen and lines the inner abdominal wall. Peritonitis is inflammation of the peritoneum and can be a serious medical emergency. It is caused by a perforation in the abdomen or as a complication from other medical conditions, such as pancreatitis, diverticulitis, appendicitis or trauma.

Symptoms

Symptoms of peritonitis include:

  • Pain and tenderness in the abdomen
  • Fever
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Infrequent urination
  • Thirst
  • Fatigue

Treatment Options

Swift diagnosis and treatment of peritonitis is important as it can lead to a life-threatening infection throughout the body. Treatment for the infection and inflammation includes:

  • Antibiotics – Prescription-strength antibiotics will help kill the infection and stop it from spreading across your body.
  • Surgery – Surgery may be needed to remove the infected tissue and stop the spread of infection.
  • Symptom management – Additional treatment, such as pain medication, IV fluids and blood transfusion may be needed based on your symptoms and side effects of the infection.
