A newer diagnostic test available through Temple’s cardiac catheterization lab, intravascular ultrasound imaging (IVUS), is used to provide more information about plaque build-up in the walls of the coronary arteries. A small ultrasound probe is inserted directly into a coronary artery via a catheter, creating images of any plaque inside the artery wall. This is especially useful if other tests have been inconclusive, or to determine whether an angioplasty has been successful.
