An echocardiogram is a non-invasive test that uses reflected sound waves (ultrasound) emitted by a handheld transducer to create a moving picture of the heart. This allows cardiologists to assess heart function and see any damage or defects in the walls or valves of the heart, as well as examine the size and shape of heart chambers.
