Heller myotomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to release constricted esophageal muscles and allow food and liquids to pass freely into the stomach. This procedure is most commonly used to treat achalasia, a disorder that makes it hard for food and liquid to pass into the stomach.
During the procedure, your surgeon will make several small incisions (cuts) in your chest and insert a thin tube into your esophagus. This tube has a camera and light attached and also allows small instruments to be passed through to allow your surgeon to repair constricted esophageal muscles.
Heller myotomy may offer several benefits as an alternative to open surgery, including:
-
Less pain after surgery
-
Shorter stay in the hospital (one to two days compared to one week with an open procedure)
-
Quicker recovery after surgery
-
Faster return to work and normal activities
