Thrombolytic therapy is an immediate treatment for acute pulmonary embolism, heart attack or stroke that is caused by blood clots obstructing major vessels. Drugs are administered that rapidly break up or dissolve major blood clots, restoring the flow of blood and limiting damage to the heart or brain. Administering thrombolytic drugs as soon as possible can increase a patient’s chances of survival. Other therapies such as cardiac catheterization or angioplasty may also be used to restore normal blood flow. Temple specialists work quickly to use the appropriate combination of therapies for patients in need of emergency treatment.
