Sometimes cholesterol, fat, calcium and other substances in the blood combine and form a build-up (plaque) on the inner walls of blood vessels. This causes them to narrow over time. When this happens it is called atherosclerosis and it’s a condition that may lead to blood clots, heart attack and stroke.
You can reduce your risk of developing atherosclerosis and other heart problems by keeping your blood cholesterol within normal limits, which sometimes requires medications.
