Cardiomyopathy

Cardiomyopathy is a condition where the heart muscle is injured or diseased. Cardiomyopathy can make the heart muscle too thick (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy), too stiff (restrictive), or too weak and large (dilated). Common causes are coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, viral infections, inherited defects, chemotherapy, alcohol or cocaine use and connective tissue diseases. Cardiomyopathy is a life threatening condition, however, it can be treated. Since some forms of cardiomyopathy can be passed from parent to child, family members should be examined
