Premature Ventricular Contractions (PVCs)

What Are Premature Ventricular Contractions (PVCs)?

Premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) are a kind of irregular heartbeat that some people feel as a fluttering sensation in the chest. PVCs are caused by an occasional extra heartbeat in the lower chambers of the heart. When this happens, it can temporarily disrupt the heart’s normal rhythm.

This condition is usually not dangerous if your heart is otherwise healthy. However, if symptoms are frequent or uncomfortable or if you have an underlying heart condition, your doctor might recommend treatment.

Causes

The contractions of a normal heartbeat come at a steady pace, starting in the upper right chamber of the heart. Occasionally, the lower chambers of the heart may initiate an early beat on their own, triggering a contraction that is out of rhythm. This is a PVC.

It is not always clear what triggers PVCs. PVCs can sometimes occur when one is dehydrated, stressed, sick, or with surges of adrenaline after exercise. PVCs are often felt at rest or when one is trying to fall asleep. PVCs can also be triggered by certain medications, alcohol or drugs, as well as tobacco or caffeine.

When to Seek a Specialist

If you get a fluttering sensation in your chest, or if it feels like your heart is pounding or skipping a beat, get it checked out. Your doctor or a specialist can help determine what is causing your symptoms and if there is any reason for concern. If your PVCs are coming very frequently or if you have a history of heart disease, it might mean you need more urgent care.

To get a diagnosis, a specialist will run tests including an EKG. You might also be asked to wear a heart monitor for days or weeks, to catch a recording of your heartbeat whenever symptoms occur. In some cases, your doctor might also have you do an exercise stress test on a treadmill or bike.
